I know the Zumba craze is old and I am as usual behind the times, but I must post about how awesome it is.

You enter a room full of all ages, races and sizes dressed in baggy t shirts and sneaks with glitter 'jangle' belts wrapped around their waists. In all honesty, you expect very little from these women and then the music starts. Bitches be crazy! Welcome to the most insane and fun hour of fitness you can get in the burbs. Not only is the music great and the dances moves super fun, but these completely unsuspecting ladies can completely rock it. Don't get me wrong, there were one or two tripping and running in the walls, but for the most part it is a dance party and everyone knows the moves. Its the closest I'll ever get to being in a Bollywood movie. I have taken plenty of jazzercise and step aerobics, but this was the first time that I actually felt happy and good about moving. Seeing this housewives, students and bus drivers totally and completely breaking it down gives me hope that maybe I too can dance one day.

So thank you Zumba. And for those of you who haven't tried this craze, DO! It is too fun!

blog FAIL. again.

ello blogiverse.

so, I really am just terrible at blogging, but I do love to do it when I have a chance. maybe, I shouldn't be a write, but maybe its just not my season in life.

I have been doing ca-razy amounts of grad school work, which is not in the least bit challenging, but is completely exhausting. Hello busy work! At least I have a partner in crime to do so with. This past week Becca and I have been spending a lot of time in the Decatur libaray and it is a miracle we haven't been kicked out yet. I had a complete ridiculous uncontrollable fit of giggles almost as bad as the medieval dance mania known as tarantism. There was a stage four sigher sitting near us and he was not one bit amused with us (or life in general). But, at least these things keep all of this summer work from being completely miserable and tedious.

so, how have I been doing on those resolutions I set? ehhh..

I cannot play the harmonica. I have blues, but no rhy

thm. C'est la vie.

My room is still cleanish and I am actually redecorating.

Bike for Books failed.

Relay for Life was great! :)

My 'prom dress' was fugly, but the students loved the evening that we put together.

My brothers are spending the summer in China, so no visiting them. :(

I did however, rock a fun swimsuit on a fantabulous vacation with Becca and Luke.

So yea.. let's see the rest of the summer goes....

Also, I have a new addiction.. WHYNATTE!!! Its deliciously addictive.

and the Winner is...

I am Top Chef.
I won audience favorite at the chili cook off. I battled the Greek Gods, dueled Lord Voldemort and my head exploded. Sleep was on short-order last night and I paid dearly.

I woke up this morning feeling as though I spent the night wandering the desert looking for Jim Morrison (Wayne's World style). My mouth felt as though a sand paper factory had started up overnight and my cerebral cortex had most definitely had a jackhammer crew working full throttle.

So I did something for the first time all school year, I called my boss and claimed a sick day!

With the help of air-conditioning, a liter of water, advil, excedrin and my ever so important Holly Golightly face mask, I recovered by noon. Thank you Holly and FredFlare.com.

I finally got my emissions done on Bartholomew, though I couldn't figure out how to find the mileage gage.

I went to McDonalds to visit the parents, having forgotten that I was pulling a Jaquoin Pheonix today with my knit beret and Raybans and all-around uncleanliness. I was indeed laughed at, but I got a free coke to heal the headache that was threatening to make an encore.

I came home to find my dear sweet Alfie hanging in the kitchen and I scratched her belly to welcome her back to the family. I do hope she is allowed to stay this time or I move out in time to save her.

Now I sit in my room looking forward to the rest of the day. I hope to salvage this day with finishing the fixing of the mess that is my habitat. I will see two of my favorite Pardens later and spend time reading subtitles.

Sick days can be a good thing in the end, even if I truly hate the feeling of letting my job down. So take that crazy dreams and increasingly painful blood pressure of my brain matter, you cannot keep me down!!!

estoy terrible

I am simply terrible at keeping this blog, but here goes it again.

It is a new year! a new day! a new beauty to behold!

I am simply ecstatic about this year because I am trying

to have a better outlook on life. Happiness is choice so why not choose it in this short time we have?

So resolution of the life, every day be a better versio

n of myself. Resolution of the year, be more self-serving ( we all need to take care of ourselves and we all deserve a wee bit of selfishness)

I am giving myself a bucket-esque list for the year. So let's see how it goes...

January- Play "London Bridge" on my brand new C Harp (That's a harmonica for all you non-hipsters ;) )

<img style="cursor:pointer;
At the Fundación Salvación, there were many children who touched my heart. The children not only desperately need love, but they have much love to give. On a regular basis, these children meet new people who they bond with and love and as quickly as people come into their lives, they leave again. The children have no shortage of experience dealing with loss. The children have already lost their parents, families, homes and whatever sort of life they led before being taken in by Sandra. With the set up of the orphanage as it is, many of the children re-experience the loss of their parents on a regular basis. There are visitation days on a regular basis and on these days the children’s parents may visit. This can be heartbreaking in many ways. For some children, they must see other kids get visits, while their parents may never come. It is also heartbreaking to see the parents who cannot afford to provide for you. Another situation regarding the parents at Fundación Salvación is that some parents may work at the orphanage. This is the reality for the girl who stole my heart, Mishel.

Mishel is four years old. Mishel’s mother, Loyda, works for the orphanage. Mishel was born at Fundación Salvación and she has an older brother named Gustavo. Though it is apparent that Mishel is well taken care of, her mother dresses her in the morning and puts earrings on her, but it seems as though the relationship with her mother is inconsistent at best. From the story Sandra told at her house, it is unclear, but her mother has a past of working on the street and that some times she leaves the orphanage for extended periods of time. When Loyda is at Fundación Salvación, she is attentive to Mishel and Gustavo, but she does not seem to be there reliably. This inconsistent presence of Mishel’s mother has to leave her constantly wondering whether or not her mother will return. Because of these trust issues Mishel may experience lasting damage, emotionally and psychologically. Mishel will probably have a difficult time forming lasting bonds and strong relationships with others. The impact of Mishel’s situation to her attitude is already presenting itself. In the short time I spent with Mishel, I experience the impact first hand.

From the first day I arrived at Fundación Salvación, I connected with Mishel. She became ‘mi amiga’ and the feeling was mutual. Whenever our bus would pull into Fundación Salvación, I could see her standing on the side with her little brown eyes searching. Everyday she stood and looked for me. She loved to swing and most days she would grab my hand to lead me to the swing before both of my feet stepped off the bus. When we went to Zacaleu, I sat in the circle with her and her friends and she made sure to point out to the girls that I was her amiga. I left the circle while the girls finished off another pizza and climbed one of the temples. Before I knew it, Mishel had climbed to the top to find me. I knew in these days that I would never forget Mishel and I could only hope that she would never forget me.

On the last Thursday spent in Huehuetenango, I feared that had changed. When I tried to talk to Mishel, she ignored me and when I went to pick her, she screamed. My heart ached to think Mishel had gotten bored with me and moved on. Mishel chose to only spend time with Erick and Ana from this point on. Erick and Ana were familiar and would mostly likely return. One of the other little girls who I had spent time with and who was friends with Mishel was Kali. Kali attempted to explain to me why Mishel had decided to not talk to me. My Spanish skills were not to a level that would help me to understand the situation and when I brought Francisco over to translate, Kali did not want to tell him. Kali did decide though that she wanted to play with me and that she wanted me to herself. Throughout the trip, Kali had been fickle and pretended to not know me some days, while other days she would smile and hug me. I was able to understand that this was probably Kali’s coping method for not getting too attached to any one visitor. Kali is seven years old and has probably grown accustomed to the cycle. Despite recognizing this in Kali, I still felt heartbroken about Mishel ignoring me.

When I returned to the hotel, I was still very upset over the situation. I had grown to love Mishel so much over the past two weeks and hated that in my last two days, she did not want to have anything to do with me. I discussed the situation with Mickenzie. I was very relieved when I listened to Mickenzie’s perspective on the situation. She told me that she had been watching Mishel and whenever I would play with another child, Mishel would be watching me. So my fears were resolved, Mishel didn’t dislike me. Mishel was simply protecting herself and getting ready for my imminent departure. When I finally was able to translate Kali’s message to me about Mishel, I was right. Kali told me that Mishel realized that I was leaving and that she was very sad.

For these children the reality of losing loved ones is not simply in their pasts, but a continual cycle. Our last day at Fundación Salvación was the day we went to Todos Santos. We only had a short period of time before and after the trip to spend with the children. When we first arrived that morning, Mishel did not want to talk to me. Eventually, she decided that she wanted me to see her baby pictures and talk to her mom. After her mom and I finished talking, the best we could with my broken Spanish, Mishel was out. She ran off and pretended not to notice me until we left. When we returned from Todos Santos for our very last good byes, she still did not want to talk to me. Just as we were leaving Mishel gave me one last tearful hug goodbye.

I can only hope that this will not be our last hug. Though the small amount of love that missionaries can give the children in their short visits is very important and beneficial, I think that lasting bonds with the children are also very important. Knowing that at least one person cares about you enough to keep in touch can do a world of good. Even with different living situations, that include living in a ‘normal’ home with ‘normal’ parents, children need someone who truly cares and shows the intent. I hope that I can keep in touch with Mishel and return to visit her. I will continue to follow her life journey and continually pray that she will grow into an amazing woman that knows what it means to be loved.

Guatemala: A Beauty that Hurts

Upon arriving to Guatemala, I was not quite sure what to expect. There was the half of me expecting to see a similar sight to the ‘America’ I am used to and the other half of me expected the version of picture book version Guatemala I had seen when I had browsed the Internet. Both expectations were filled simultaneously. From within the airport I could see familiarities of a ‘normal’ airport I am most used to, but the people found within the airport differed. Though there was a fair share of people in modern clothing, there were also many in traditional Guatemalan dress. There were also many people dressed as though they stepped off a ranch. The general feeling of the airport made me reminiscent of summers spent in Texas during my childhood.

My first experience outside of the airport in Guatemala was another experience that I was entirely too familiar with. For lunch the first day we were treated to the an ‘authentic’ Guatemalan lunch, McDonalds. This would be just the beginning of the relationship for the duration of my stay. Though the foods were familiar, the experience was not. More than just the delivery scooters that sat outside the fast food establishment, the service was distinguishable from the typical fast food experience. For the entirety of our stay, the friendliness and courtesy of food service workers far surpassed that of what it is common in the United States.

Though the cities share a very common thread of the ‘American’ experience with the United States, the drives through the country and smaller towns showed a side of Guatemala that was not completely manipulated by the ‘western’ influence. The lands in between towns were cultivated from the tops to the bottoms of hills and the animals grazed to the roads edges. There was no mistake that the people utilized whatever resources available and that they worked hard to survive. One distinct difference to the farmlands that I am most accustomed to seeing, other than the cultivation of steep hillsides, was the lack of machinery. The farming is done by hand. The beauty of the land seemed to be preserved by this. Within the towns, there was no lack of machinery. At times I felt as though I was in the town from the movie Cars, Radiator Falls, because the majority of the shops seemed dedicated to the maintenance of vehicles. Upon arriving in Huehuetenango, the vehicle of choice was no doubt the scooter. I do not think I have ever seen so many scooters in one place, nor have I ever seen a family of four on a scooter before.

Huehuetenango was more of a city than the suburban city I am used to, but definitely not on the same level as Guatemala City. Huehuetenango was to Guatemala City as an expansive ranch style home to a multistory mansion. The city held many people, but seemed more spread out. Though we were staying in the ‘city’, the expansive mountain range seemed to be just a step out the door from our hotel. One consistent theme to the hotels in Guatemala was the feeling of outside on the inside. Every hotel we went to had fountains and greenery on the inside as well as an outdoor courtyard within. Within the city square there were trees, including one tree that was traditionally used in the courting process. Ana, one of our translators, explained that back in the day, before text messages and Facebook, young women would go stand by this tree and wait to be ‘conquered’. The young men of the villages would come to this tree to court the women. Now the tree was just a tree to sit around and converse with others. The town square of Huehue was very active and many people were selling goods from produce to phones.

In Huehue, there was a very beautiful place that we were able to spend time at. The Fundación Salvación was a private orphanage in the town founded by a woman named Sandra. Here we were able to see the heart of Guatemala. The children here were some of the smartest, kindest and most beautiful children I have ever met. From my first steps off the bus, I knew that Guatemala would forever have a piece of my heart. Though the children’s situations differed, they all simply needed love and mas fotas. The children loved having their pictures taking doing silly things and showing off on the playground equipment. Our first Saturday in Guatemala we were able to have a pizza party with the children. One minuscule detail of the party was that it was held at the local Mayan ruins. It was quite a melding of worlds that day with Dominos pizza delivery, college students of a variety of ages from the United States, and Guatemalan children of various heritages all at a site of Ancient Mesoamerica. If this experience was not a multicultural experience, I do not know what is. The ruins were beautiful as were the views from the top, though slightly terrifying. The children showed absolutely no fear as they ran around the tops of the pyramids just the same as if they were on solid ground. One day they performed dances for a volunteer who was leaving and they showed a great deal of pride in everything they did. Later in the trip, they performed more dances for us, including a traditional dance reflecting the market experience. Our last full day at the orphanage the children set up a mock market place and we played as though we were going through and purchasing goods with fake money and rocks. Some of the older kids even made some very delicious and fresh tortillas and black beans. This last day was a nice chance to experience Guatemalan culture from the children’s perspectives. No matter where you are in the world, children have the same fresh perspective on life and the world. This really helps one to see that no matter how different we all may think we are, we have similar origins in our humanity and childhoods.

The lives of Guatemalans are very diverse. One of our last nights in Huehue, we were able to visit Sandra’s home, which was vastly different than what most loving conditions seemed to be. Though on the outside her home was standard to the city with concrete walls, the inside seemed very similar inside to what you would see in the United States, other than the large waterfall area with jungle-esque plants. There were even little dogs running around and baby toys making noises upstairs. A stark contrast to this was our visit to the mountain villages to pass out clothes. There were tiny children holding other children on their backs and the children’s cheeks were painfully chapped. The people seemed so desperate for the meager handouts we had to give them that they swamped our bus. Guatemala is many ways seemed to be a country of extremes. No matter how poor people may think they are in the United States, I have never seen such a disparity or need as a did in the mountains of Guatemala.

The examples of desperation continued as our journey in Guatemala continued to other places, but in a different way. Upon arriving at our hotel in Panajachel on Lake Atitlán, we were for the first time on our trip swarmed by people trying to sell their goods. Lake Atitlán was one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. We were able to cross the lake on a massive boat to the Santiago Atitlán. Upon reaching Santiago Atitlán, we were once again surrounded by people with goods to sell. The town seemed to cater to tourism, as there were many booths set up with traditional Guatemalan souvenirs to sell and the people running the booths had memorized choice English phrases. “That looks very nice, you are so handsome my friend!”, “I remember you from yesterday!”, and “I will sell to you very cheap, five US dollars!” seemed popular phrases. One lesson learned by our group that day was to not pull out large amounts of money. Once one person in the group made this mistake, the word got around and we became very popular. Nearing the end of our visit in Santiago Atitlán, I was ready to go because I was feeling terrible for having to ignore and old woman and a child who would not let up on trying to sell Mickenzie and I bracelets.

The next day we traveled to Antigua and the shopping experience was not nearly as intense. The market place was more organized and the people were not as pursuant. One experience within the market place that I did not really enjoy was bartering. Though part of me enjoys the thought of getting a bargaining, a larger part of me felt wrong trying to argue down a price. I felt as though I was putting a price on the value of the person’s time. Who I am to say their time isn’t as valuable as a few more quetzals? There were many things in Guatemala that felt like a bargain, but at what point I am as a person deeming the worth of theses people’s time and energy less than mine?

George Lovell wrote a book about Guatemala that was title A Beauty that Hurts. This title could not be a more accurate description of this country that seems worlds away from the United States, when in actuality the plane ride from Atlanta to Guatemala City is shorter than a plane ride to California. Guatemala is a lost world that is in many ways starving for love.
